Emergency dentistry

In pain? We're here to help — fast.

Dental pain has impeccable timing — Friday evenings, bank holidays, the first morning of your Peak District walking holiday. Whatever's happened, don't sit on it: infections travel, cracked teeth worsen, and knocked-out teeth are on a countdown measured in minutes. Call us. We aim to see emergency patients the same day, and out of hours our answerphone tells you exactly what to do next.

Most emergency slots are allocated early, so ring before 9am where possible. Outside opening hours, call the same number and listen for your options.

Is it an emergency?

Call now if you have any of these

  • Toothache that painkillers won't touch, or that wakes you at night
  • Facial or gum swelling
  • A knocked-out, broken or suddenly loose tooth
  • Bleeding that won't stop after an extraction
  • A lost crown or filling that's causing real pain

Important

Swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing is a medical emergency

Go to A&E immediately or call 999. Don’t wait for a dental appointment — a spreading infection that restricts the airway needs hospital treatment first. We’ll sort the tooth afterwards.

While you wait

First aid that actually helps

None of this replaces being seen — but done right, it can save a tooth or take the edge off the pain until you’re in the chair.

Knocked-out adult tooth

Handle it by the crown, never the root. If it’s clean, push it gently back into the socket and bite on a cloth; otherwise store it in milk (not water, not tissue) and get here fast — minutes matter. Baby teeth: don’t re-insert; call us.

Toothache

Painkillers as directed (paracetamol or ibuprofen — never aspirin rubbed on the gum, it burns), a cold compress outside the cheek, and keep your head elevated at night.

Lost crown

Keep it safe and bring it with you — re-cementing is often simple. Temporary cement from a chemist can tide you over; superglue cannot.

Bleeding socket

Bite firmly on a rolled, clean handkerchief for 20 minutes, sitting upright. Still bleeding? Call us.

What happens when you call

Contact the practice — we aim to offer a same-day appointment. Outside opening hours, call 01629 812 991 and listen for your options: telephone advice on weekday evenings and an emergency on-call service covering weekends and bank holidays.

In hours, emergency treatment is charged per item with an estimate before anything starts. Out-of-hours call-outs carry a call-out fee, shown on our price list, plus the cost of any treatment — the call-out fee is covered for patients with Denplan Dental Emergency and Injury Cover.

Not a registered patient? Call us anyway — we’ll do our best, and emergencies are triaged on need.

Visiting the Peak District?

Holiday rescued

Bakewell fills with walkers, cyclists and holidaymakers — and a fair few find us mid-trip with a broken tooth or abscess. We regularly help visitors and will happily liaise with your home dentist afterwards.

“Your excellent care stopped my problem ruining our holiday — thank you all so much!”

Questions

Emergency FAQs

How quickly will I be seen?

We aim for the same day. Ringing before 9am gives us the best chance of an early slot.

What will it cost?

In hours: our normal fee per item, with an estimate before treatment. Out of hours: a call-out fee plus treatment — both on our price list. The call-out fee is covered with Denplan Dental Emergency and Injury Cover.

I’m not a registered patient — can you still see me?

Call us — we’ll do our best, and emergencies are triaged on need.

My child has knocked a tooth

Call immediately. Baby teeth are managed differently from adult teeth (never re-insert a baby tooth), and we’ll talk you through it on the phone.
