Treatments · Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth arrive last to a mouth where all the good seats are taken. Some slot in without fuss and can be left entirely alone; others come in sideways, half-emerge and trap food, or throw painful flare-ups every few months. When removal is the right call, our experienced clinicians carry out surgical extractions here in Bakewell, and will discuss with you when it is appropriate to consider referral.

What patients say about the practice

Is it right for you?

If any of these sound familiar…

Not every wisdom tooth needs to go — but these are the situations where removal is usually the right call.

  • Recurring pain or swelling at the back corners of your mouth (pericoronitis — the classic half-erupted wisdom tooth flare-up)
  • Food constantly trapping around a partly-through tooth
  • Decay in a wisdom tooth (or the tooth in front) that can’t be properly fixed
  • An X-ray has shown an impacted tooth causing trouble

Why here

Surgical extractions, local.

Surgical extractions are assessed, carried out and followed up here in Bakewell, guided by NICE restraint — and we will tell you when referral is the better option.

  • Experienced clinicians

Surgical extractions are carried out here by experienced clinicians, who will discuss with you when it is appropriate to consider referral.

  • Local means local

Assessment, extraction and follow-up in Bakewell wherever that is right for you — close to home.

  • Evidence-led restraint

We follow national (NICE) guidance: trouble-free wisdom teeth stay. We remove problems, not teeth on principle.

  • The flare-up cycle ends

Each pericoronitis episode tends to invite the next. Removal closes the loop for good.

Your journey

Assess, remove, recover.

Every wisdom tooth is judged on its own behaviour — and the X-ray drives an honest risk conversation first.

  1. / 03

    Assessment

Examination plus an X-ray to map the tooth’s position and its relationship to the nerve that runs nearby — this drives an honest risk conversation.

  2. / 03

    The extraction

Under local anaesthetic; impacted teeth may be sectioned and removed in pieces, which sounds dramatic and is actually the gentle way.

  3. / 03

    Recovery

Full written aftercare, and we’re at the end of the phone. Most people are back to normal within a few days.

The honest picture

Straight answers, before you decide.

We don’t remove wisdom teeth on principle — only where there’s genuine, recurring trouble, and only after an honest risk conversation.

  • Not every one should come out

We follow NICE guidance and recommend removal only where there’s genuine, recurring pathology.

  • A small nerve risk, explained

Lower removal carries a small risk of temporary (rarely lasting) numbness of the lip or tongue where roots sit near the nerve — your X-ray lets us quantify and discuss it before anything is decided.

Making it last

Heal well.

Good aftercare in the first few days is what keeps recovery smooth — and one habit matters more than the rest.

  1. Rest, don't rinse on day one

The clot is the healing — leave it undisturbed for the first 24 hours.

  2. Warm salt-water from day two

Gentle rinses after meals keep things clean.

  3. Soft food, other side

Chew away from the socket while it settles.

  4. Don't smoke

Smoking is the main cause of painful “dry socket” — abstain while healing, ideally forever.

Good to know

Common questions

Usually a few days of manageable soreness and some swelling — ordinary painkillers and good aftercare handle it. Day three is often the peak; then it turns.

Not usually. Many surgical extractions are carried out here in the practice; if your case would be better treated elsewhere, we will discuss referral with you.

Almost never as a package. Each tooth is judged on its own behaviour — many patients only ever lose one or two.

We’ll check it — an unopposed wisdom tooth can over-erupt over time. Monitoring at check-ups usually suffices.
